McLaren main Zak Brown has stressed that the groups return to Mercedes engines in 2021 will not be the sole catalyst to races being won by them again in F1.
Amid whats proving their very best season since their past 2014, McLaren last week declared that a return into the manufacturers energy unit after next when the groups deal with Renault comes to a conclusion.
Brown, McLarens CEO, describes McLaren as being in amomentum-building mode and says the Mercedes deal provides after additional piece to the puzzle as they bid to come back to the front.
Asked if the change in power unit would return them into winning manners, Brown told Sky Sports F1:On the years, however I think that its not electricity unit that is keeping us back from winning races right now, I believe its ourselves.
I dont think were yet ready to win – it is one step at a time. We are having a fantastic season and we need to continue taking steps forward.
In Formula 1 that which is about little incremental earnings, but I think that its not quite as easy as putting a different engine and we are back to front. We have got a whole lot more work before us than just changing motors.
Brown added:The chassis is great but I do not think its as excellent as the three teams in front of us, quite frankly. We know where its a few areas on track.
Weve got a fresh wind tunnel coming and I think we are behind in certain aerodynamic development, partially because we dont possess our very own wind tunnel that is state of the art. With Formula 1 it a little bit as opposed to a specific area, so I believe we are making great progress.
If you have a take a look at Mercedes, before they dominated they obtained a race and then you build momentum, so were only at a momentum-building manner at the moment.
A race was last won by a combined 20 world championship titles winners however their from the constructors championship is their highest setting since that season.
And Brown believes that they can challenge the recent world champions of F1 as a motor customer.
I am very confident that Mercedes supplies all the telemetry so that its clear what is at the Mercedes grand prix car is exactly the exact same thats at the Williams and also the Dominion Point cars, explained Brown to reporters.
When we do a very good job with our staff, execute, drivers do a fantastic job, then I think we can. But youre going to need to be on your own A-game.
And Mercedes manager Toto Wolff stated:If you see the guys that I am at interacting with – Andreas [Seidl], James Key or Zak – you can observe theyre energised and they want to return to wherever McLaren deserves to be. Were up for the battle .
When are McLaren switching to Mercedes engines?
In 2021, McLaren will operate Mercedes hybrid unit after one year powered by Renault at 2020.
Just how long is the bargain for?
The agreement is for a period of four seasons before 2024.
Why are McLaren heading back into Mercedes?
McLaren believe that while their time with Renault since 2018 hasgiven us a lot of power and their engine continues to enhance towards the Woking costumes increase back up the grid, Mercedes will take them to another level.
we would like to continue up the grid and, very simply, Mercedes has become the benchmark electricity unit in this hybrid , explained Brown. The rules will not actually change much [on the 2021 motor ] so we are putting our bets that we believe that is likely to be the energy unit to have.
Were any paths considered by them?
Brown claims the prospect of approaching Ferrari, that have 2019s standout motor, wasnt believed – pointing to someclear brand battle between the two manufacturers of supercars – although the concept of building their own in-house powe unit isnt regarded as viable.
Can not Mercedes reject a McLaren strategy before?
An agreement was not reached, although in 2017, as Honda and McLaren ready to part business, talks were held between the former partners.
Back in the day Niki [Lauda] and that I used to have big discussions around whether we needed to provide other teams or focus on our own scenario, Wolff told Sky F1. Ever since then times have changed a little bit. We believe that the learning curve is steeper with having engines out there. You saw that we had any failures on Kubicas car in Spa and Perezs auto in Monza and thats part of this learning process.
It is a money subject also – one more customer means better cash flow to Daimler total – and we are up for the challenge. McLaren is a wonderful team and a good set of people, but let us go [for it].
What does it mean for Mercedes teams future?
Nothing, according to Wolff, together with the future of their involvement as a group owner beyond 2020 not linked to motor supply agreements.
One isnt linked to another, Wolff told Sky F1. I think weve got to see Formula 1 develops and were in an essential time now to observe where the regs go along with how it all pans out. Its a different topic to supplying clients, which will be a standalone decision.
Wolff also stated in Sochi:The [McLaren] connection is pretty strong due to these days [1995-2014] but for us it was essential to make clear that theres a works team now and this is a customer power unit connection, and not the start of a functions deal and us not being there anymore.
What today for Renault?
As it stands, Renault team is going to probably be the one conducting the makers engine in 2021, whereas competitions Ferrari, Honda and Mercedes all will have two teams on their books.
But that is not in accordance with their team chief Cyril Abiteboul. Studying the regulations, if the effort of standardisation, simplification, aero principles, go forward we think that the two big performance differentiators would be engine, and engine optimisation and installation, the Frenchman told Sky Sports in the Russian GP.
In that respect, frankly its far much better to be alone and to keep to us what we are developing. Weve got some beliefs in that which were developing and, frankly, if its a good secret I would rather keep it for myself.
