Liam Hendriks (0-1, 4.13 ERA) is expected to hurl an inning and likely much more prior to handing the ball into another reliever. Hendriks hasn’t pitched more than just two innings in any look this year, nor has he thrown more than 38 pitches within an outing. Through September, the 29-year-old made 12 trips to the mound, throwing a total of 13 innings while allowing only two earned runs on eight hits and striking out 10 batters.
Oakland utilized this approach when it took on New York in early September and the strategy didn’t work in its own favor. Hendriks tossed one perfect inning vs the Bronx Bombers on Sept. 4 before handing the reins to Daniel Mengden, who hurled 4.2 scoreless innings, but the bullpen failed down the stretch in a 5-1 loss. Oakland had the third-best bullpen ERA in the majors this year with a joint 3.37 ERA and the best bullpen ERA because the all-star break.
Expect a similar approach to this September match versus New York tonight. Edwin Jackson is the only true starter on the roster tonight so I assume he is going to be the guy coming in to begin the second inning. Jackson has been 6-3 this year with a 3.33 ERA and the A’s have won his past six starts. New York was not faced this year by him.
