Justin Thomas has backed Tiger Woods to mention himself as a captain’s choice for the Presidents Cup side of Team USA this year.
Woods missed out on automatic qualification for its biennial competition although winning a 15th major title at the Masters in April, together with Brooks Koepka, Justin Thomas, Dustin Johnson, Patrick Cantlay, Xander Schauffele, Webb Simpson, Matt Kuchar and Bryson DeChambeau occupying those spots.
The 43-year-old battled injury issues with Woods place to return to activity at the Zozo Championship in Japan and underwent surgery in August to repair knee cartilage damage, during the next half of this year.
Woods names his side to be completed by the four selections early next month, with the American captain being believed by Thomas should name himself.
“I believe if he is healthy and playing well, I suggest, I will take him, you understand, 100 days out of 100,” Thomas said. “I believe he understands his own body and understands himself well enough to make your choice.
“He has asked me about it and I’ve told him that identical thing. For him, it’s about wellness, and for anyone. They will need to make sure their game is prepared and their own body is prepared since it’s not something that you do to do.
“If he’s going to choose himself, he is only going to take action if he is ready and he is playing well. So I guess we will just have to wait and watch.”
US Open champion Gary Woodland and recent Ryder Cup players Tony Finau, Patrick Reed, Rickie Fowler and Phil Mickelson – who has featured in every American group since 1994 – are among the other gamers looking for a pick, with Thomas having complete faith in Woods to select the ideal players.
“He [Tiger] has reached out to all people on the team about what we think and what we want,” Thomas added. “It is sort of a different year, but that having been said, it’s not a terrible thing, it’s a fantastic thing.
“It shows how profound our team is and the number of amazing players we really have with the chance and the possibility of having on the team playing. He’s likely to make the decisions that are correct.
“He’s going to do what is ideal for the team, not what is best for him or what is ideal for one individual person. The strict and only reason of being a captain is to select the top players on the team which we can attempt to try to win at the Presidents Cup.”
